An Overcomer

During April of 2004 I realized I had a larger purpose in life. My name is Danita Davis and I am a native of Durham, North Carolina. Through God’s inspiration I was motivated to create Inspirational Productions.

Inspirational Productions is a non profit organization that uses visual art therapy to promote awareness, healing and enlightenment. Our productions promote personal restoration and victory through theatrical productions, personal growth seminars, community outreach, domestic violence summits, and university events.

Through this inspirational vision, I was able to write and produce “Storms of Life” a musical production based on my true life story and victory. After 8 months of writing I brought to the stage my real life testimony of abuse from my own marriage. The show included the story of how my children and I fled from my husband’s violence.

The Department of Justice defines domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.

"Storms of Life" is full of dance, music, and stories bringing information and solutions to the audience while raising awareness of the domestic violence problems within all of our communities. Through visual art therapy, Inspirational Productions helps people overcome their fears.

Visual art therapy is effective as an outreach communication method because it impacts the inherent ability to entertain while engaging and educating the audience. This method creates an atmosphere for people—as well as their friends, and family members—that are hurting and encourages self discovery from within in order to promote healing, emotionally and psychologically.

During the production the audience is able to move into a state of awareness and into a state of individual and community healing. I heard from the audience that this production brought awareness and closure to the part of their lives that needed healing. The young and single members from the audience were happy to learn about the warning signs and things to look out for.

I believe that this healing will create stronger families and communities that will work together to change the generational cycle of domestic violence and everyday challenges. Two weeks after seeing the production one of the mothers of a cast member was able to leave her abusive relationship. She is now living in her own place with her younger children.

Next year we will be doing the show in October in Raleigh, NC and we are delighted to say that we will be going to Germany for one whole month to perform the show for the US Army.

There were 260 people attending this year’s show. 10% of the proceeds will be going to help organizations for battered women and the balance will help to improve the overall production.

Each time I work with Inspirational Productions I find more closure. I also see that my life can help others realize that they also can get out and find peace, love, freedom, and themselves before there was abuse.

Yes, I’m happily married... he's my king and I’m his queen...
